Fregon Camp

Fregon is a round trip of roughly 3,700kms, making stops at Woomera, Coober Pedy, Fregon, Yulara, back to Coober and Pt Augusta.

After 35 years of operation, Fregon camp allows our students the opportunity to mix with Fregon students, teachers, parents and elders to learn more about the rich culture and history of the Fregon mob. It is impossible to go on a school camp to Fregon and Uluru and not come home in awe of what you have experienced.

Our students are privileged to be part of an extraordinary exchange programme that that will give them an amazing new understanding of our breathtaking country and its beautiful Indigenous people who have retained so much of their language and culture in the APY Lands (Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatara)

Some of the experiences whilst staying in Fregon included spear making for the boys, gum nut necklace making, a traditional art and language lesson, basket weaving, a local footy game and the infamous witchetty grub hunting/eating.

After Fregon a visit to Yulara where we could watch the sunset over Uluru (Ayers Rock) and trek through Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). This year the students were also treated to an Opal Mine tour in Cooper Pedy

It is a very special experience that helps create a strong bond between the year 6 students where they all learn something about themselves, especially how resilient they are and have become.

The exchange program then continues and we see some upper primary Fregon mob, including some elders, come to visit Victor Harbor and our community in November.

“Fregon was great! Meeting the kids for the first time was amazing. As soon as I got off the bus a group of girls were calling my name. I became incredibly close with a girl named Josephine. It was hard to say goodbye. Most nights at Fregon, Maddy, Jade and I would watch Mrs Norris make necklaces out of gum nuts. The Inma dance was incredible. I was a witchetty grub. Eating witchetty grubs was great, they tasted a little like chicken and egg, they were surprisingly delicious. The whole experience was amazing!”

“While some people climbed Uluru we did a great base walk. There were many signs telling us where people once lived and did activities. There were some great rock formations and awesome scenery. I will never forget that walk.”

“The most memorable moment on Fregon was getting to meet the Fregon kids. I made a lot of friends like Jasmine, Natalie, Erin, Josephine and Cassaria. I ate one witchetty grub. It tasted like egg and was very chewy. At Coober Pedy we got to have pizza from a shop, it was yum. Fregon is the BEST CAMP. I had an awesome experience and would love to go again.”
