<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Our Unit is a Department for Education Special Option hosted by Victor Harbor Primary School for the Southern Fleurieu region.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n We have a higher staff to student ratio than the mainstream. From 2022, we cater for students from Reception to Year 6. We are resourced to meet the specialised needs of students with complex disabilities. A communication board is a composition of images, with specific arrangement and design to support communication by pointing to or touching one or multiple images.
This is a form of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).
A Playground Chat communication board in our space will benefit people of all abilities. It can act as a menu to suggest things a person might like to say, clarify a verbal message when it\u2019s difficult to understand, or as a replacement for someone who doesn\u2019t use verbal speech.
Predictable words are aligned with well recognised symbols that support the exchange of a message. The grid-style layout is used to express thoughts, needs, wants and ideas by pointing to the symbols, or using gestures. It also facilitates learning of new vocabulary and reading. It can support use of individual symbols, or more structured sentences using multiple symbols. We are presenting vocabulary that doesn\u2019t disappear. Students can use it to interact with the play areas and to communicate and connect with other children, staff and caregivers.
A Playground Chat board will empower our students with communication difficulties, providing successful communication opportunities for everybody. Furthermore, it will foster inclusion, interaction and awareness in our learning space, school and community.<\/p>\n
